A Defining Moment for the West
When Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968, the world was forced to confront racial injustice. His death became a catalyst for systemic reform.Today, the West faces another such moment. The murder of Charlie Kirk — and the contempt displayed in some reactions — exposes how deeply cruelty and polarisation have taken hold in our societies.
The Contempt Police Workers Face
At the Blue Hope Foundation, we see this contempt every day. When police workers with PTSD or other mental health injuries seek support, they are too often dismissed, stigmatised, or denied their rights. Instead of compassion, they encounter bureaucracy, silence, and disbelief.
This contempt drives police suicide ideation. In 2023, three officers took their own lives in a single month. Since then, through early intervention, we have prevented about ten further suicides. These are not statistics — they are families saved from devastating loss.
Why Our Strategy Works
We are globally unique: the only police-focused charity working at the intersection of law, human rights, and health. Our strategy is effective because it tackles root causes, not just symptoms.
We:
Support families — often the first to notice police PTSD — to act early.
Advocate for police workers’ rights under ACC cover and the Health and Safety at Work Act.
Embed the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) into practice, pushing for PTSD to be recognised as a disability.
This approach is why we pursue recognition as a Disabled People’s Organisation (DPO), ensuring injured officers have equality, non-discrimination, and access to justice.

Law, Health, and Human Rights United
Law, health, and human rights are too often siloed. For police workers with mental injury, those gaps are deadly. Our work closes that gap. We bring together legal advocacy, occupational health, and human rights protections so that no officer is abandoned when they suffer.
Our vision is bold but essential: zero suicides within the New Zealand Police. And by proving our model here, we are building a framework that can be applied globally to other frontline services where suicide risk is high.
A Call to Action
History will remember this moment as a line in the sand. Just as King’s death reshaped the civil rights movement, today’s violence forces the West to confront the consequences of contempt.
The choice is clear: allow cruelty to dominate, or defend dignity and human rights.
At the Blue Hope Foundation, we know which side we stand on.👉 Support us. Partner with us. Share our mission. Together we can transform law, health, and human rights into a shield that protects those who serve.
